Origin: At the very start of the Revolution, the new Continental Congress needed a banner to unite the thirteen rebelling colonies. They chose thirteen alternating red-and-white stripes to represent each colony as equals in the struggle against Britain.
Fifty Stars
Origin: From the Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777, the Congress mandated “thirteen stars, white in a blue field,”
Why change them? As new territories became states, each star was added to reflect the growing Union. The current fifty-star pattern (since 1960) honors every state equally.
